Fairly self-explanatory, navigation includes materials and resources used for navigation purposes. Map / Chart and compass being the most basic of these tools but phone’s, GPS’, Delormes and other route guiding devices can be used under this category.
Navigation materials should be catered to the specific environment and needs of the activity. Maps and compasses are reliable and consistent aid’s for navigation but in some area’s downloaded maps and route guides can work just as well on your mobile device. Frequented areas can have published trail guides that can be beneficial to bring as well (usually for smaller day activities that involve specific sports). For example, the Adirondacks have a series of rock-climbing guidebooks that highlight information on the routes, locations, approach and set up of many of the ranges’ climbs that can help you be successful on these trips.
